Yeah, I know I'm posting this before my first story is uploaded. I'm telling myself it is in preparation - I like having everything in place from the get-go. But it may also be procrastination from fear of offering something so personal up for public consumption, and criticism.
I started creating the Boys from East Harbor universe last spring. I'd never written a short story that wasn't a school assignment so I didn't expect much. But as the characters developed and the details of the story were revealed on my laptop screen, the entire world came to life. Now I have 651 pages and over 240,000 words with chapters to go. This story may take the boys all the way through high school, but I haven't gotten them through a single school year yet.
In the meantime, I an writing some shorter works to test the waters. I hope to publish the first chapter of "But What Am I?" soon. I don't plan that story to be very long, but it is something that I think I can get out to readers soon. I'll publish each chapter as it is written.
"The Boys From East Harbor: Derek" will also come out before "The Boys from East Harbor: Michael" in order to introduce that universe. Once I introduced that character, a number of things were obvious to me. First, I needed to write more about this character. Second, his story didn't fit within the main work and needed to be separate. And third, his story clearly starts before the first chapter of the main work. It made sense to introduce this universe through Derek, though it will be written more as a series of short stories than as a single long work.
I'm going to get to work on finishing the first chapter of "But What Am I?" so I can share it with you soon!
Take care!
